Hyundai E&C showcased a demonstration of construction robotics technology at the "Hyundai Heavy Industries Global R&D Center" site in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on June 22. The event was attended by about 30 people, including Hyundai E&C Technology Research Center and field workers, smart construction experts such as Hyundai Robotics, as well as robot industry officials, showcasing technology demonstration of remotely-controlled construction robots.
Hyundai E&C showcased a field patrol robot and unmanned construction robots during the demonstration. A field patrol robot autonomously drove around the construction site to collect various information and respond to on-site circumstances in a remote manner. Field patrol robots are equipped with self-driving LiDAR laser-induced detection and ranging, laser scanning and distance measurement, SLAM Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, and self-driving location sensing technologies, resulting in high driving stability even in complex or dangerous construction environments. By applying various platform sensors to field patrol robots, Hyundai E&C expects to use them in various ways such as capturing contamination status of toxic substances and laser scanning around construction sites.
On this day, the unmanned construction robot conducted a perforation operation by drilling the ceiling, which a human worker wearing a protective gear would usually do on a lift. Unmanned construction robots can find operation points through AI Vision(autonomous object recognition) attached to the upper body and remotely perform given tasks based on autonomous driving. This enables accurate and efficient operation, but ultimately ensures the safety of workers engaged in high-risk operations. Application of such technologies will be expanded to include paint, welding, and masonry.
In the future, Hyundai E&C plans to improve safety-related accidents, productivity, and aging problems by linking Digital Twin – key to robot technology where physical machines, equipment and objects are implemented inside a computer, a virtual world- with BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based drawings.
A Hyundai E&C official said, "We have secured our own robot technology that can be applied to sites through technical cooperation with Hyundai Robotics," explaining that, "We will continue to improve quality and safety by strengthening R&D investment and win-win cooperation and seeking continued development of construction robots.”
