Hyundai E&C plans to utilize BIM (Building Information Modeling)-based 3D information model to manage construction quality at construction sites using digital model-based AR technology representing forms and properties of facilities in information with a goal to integrate and utilize all information generated throughout the life cycle of facilities.
The construction sector deals with different types of construction, making it challenging to understand all the work environment and tasks before the actual construction, and the traditional construction quality inspection methods where workers check manually with increased chance of error, affected the overall cost and process of the project. In order to overcome such limitations of the construction sector, Hyundai E&C has improved accessibility to BIM data by introducing AR quality management technology at construction sites.

■ Hyundai E&C Develops Proprietary BIM-based “AR Quality Management Platform”
Hyundai E&C has developed its own BIM-based "AR quality Management Platform" to improve the construction quality management and inspection productivity.
The platform provides easy access to BIM data to intuitively understand the work environment and operations at construction sites and allows for more accurate and efficient inspection of construction quality over traditional methods.
By optimizing BIM data, an application compatible with "HoloLens," an AR wearable device developed by Microsoft, and tablet PCs also has been developed.
Using the application that can check object information, measure length, and manipulate 3D model (move, copy, scale, rotate, model filter, hide) functions, 3D models can be augmented on the actual building to effectively predict the post-construction quality.

Last year, Hyundai E&C completed a pilot test of the "AR Quality Management Platform" at its Hillstate Hoam (Chungju) site to validate the platform’s excellence and is seeking to expand it to the Korea University Anam Convergence Medical Center. In the case of overseas construction, the global top builder has proposed the technology in major bidding projects in Singapore and Qatar to respond to clients’ needs for smart construction technology.
■ Application of “AR Construction and Maintenance System” to civil engineering & land development site
Hyundai E&C is jointly developing the BIM-based “AR Construction and Maintenance System” with Movements (CEO: Yoon Dae-hoon), a computer programming service provider.
The system enables implementation of AR construction guides for underground facilities such as water supply and sewage, and ground facilities such as streetlights, manholes, and signs to increase work speed and accuracy, and it will be actively used for construction quality management.
In addition, the inspection information using AR built during construction will be transferred to clients for their facility maintenance.
Hyundai E&C has successfully completed a technical validation at "Busan Eco-Delta City Zone 2-3” and will expand the application to zone 3-3.
A Hyundai E&C official said, "We are considering expanding the scope of application to safety inspection and maintenance by further developing BIM-based AR Quality management Technology."
