Hyundai E&C will apply a cloud-based BIM collaboration system at all sites of its Building and Housing business departments to accelerate smart construction. It plans to increase the efficiency of BIM project operations by introducing Autodesk BIM 360.
The Building Information Modeling (BIM) refers to a digital model including the forms and attributes of a facility so that all information occurring in the entire life cycle of the facility can be utilized based on a three-dimensional model. As a technology for improving quality and productivity, it is currently widely applied to all fields of the construction industry.
Autodesk BIM 360 introduced by Hyundai E&C is a cloud-based data management system that can integrate and manage information occurring at all stages of the construction process. It is a methodology of utilizing data storage of a virtual server using the Internet rather than a program installed on a PC, and can be accessed without any high-end hardware or software installation. In particular, it can be accessed through various smart devices such as mobile phones, tablet, and PC without temporal and spatial restrictions.
Cloud storage contains BIM models, drawings, and reports and other data related to projects from design to construction. Not only site workers but also anyone involved in a project, such as project owners, designers, and partners, can check the data in real time and review the modification history. All of these details are recorded and stored, allowing for a systematic management of project data and smoother collaboration.
Hyundai E&C has completed verification of the operability and efficiency of BIM-based collaboration environment through tests conducted since early this year. In order to deploy BIM at the company level and internalize related capabilities, in-house standards for collaboration system operation processes and user guides were established, and BIM 360 templates such as checklists and issue management items were also systematized.
Hyundai E&C, which has laid the foundation for efficient BIM data management and operation with a standardized work environment, is planning to apply the program sequentially starting with the ground-breaking sites in the second half of this year. Accordingly, it plans to save time required for project setup during new project launching in the future and secure the quality of BIM data through quality review and approval procedures using the checklist feature.
Meanwhile, Hyundai E&C has been striving to secure BIM competitiveness by establishing customized BIM strategy and developing optimal application levels for each product by launching a TFT on BIM promotion in 2019. Accordingly, the company was recognized for its capabilities by winning the grand prize last year at the BIM Award 2021, the largest BIM competition in Korea. Currently, Hyundai E&C continues to expand investment to strengthen BIM competitiveness by establishing a work system such as development of strategies, support for award of contract/implementation technology orders/performance technology, standardization of in-house guidelines.
A Hyundai E&C official said, “There is a growing number of requests for CDE adoption to achieve greater efficiency of site operations. We plan to sequentially apply this platform to all construction and housing project sites breaking ground from the second half of this year, in order to build a BIM collaboration system prior to the request of ordering organization. By doing so, we will consolidate our positioning as smart construction leader by improving productivity and design and construction quality at the sites.”
